A 100, 000-ton Coal Needle Coke Unit Was Put Into Production in Shanxi

On April 17th, Shanxi Hongte Coal chemical Industry Co., Ltd. expanded another set of coal needle coke production device with annual output of 100,000 tons formally carried out water operation joint test, and it is expected to have the conditions for commissioning trial production in May this year. It is reported that the device is expected to break the bottleneck in China’s production of UHP graphite electrode raw materials.

Needle coke is the main material for producing large size, HP and UHP graphite electrodes for EAF steel-making, which is a scarce resource in China. At present, the global annual production capacity of needle coke is about 1 million tons, and the total annual demand is about 1.3 million tons, and the global demand for needle coke is still increasing year by year.

According to the different production route of raw materials, needle coke is divided into oil needle coke and coal needle coke. At present, only a few countries, such as the United States, Britain and Japan, control the production technology of oil needle coke. At the same time, with the continuous rise of oil price, the production cost of oil needle coke is also rising, while the production technology of coal needle coke is monopolized by Japan.

The carbon industry in China needs more than 200,000 tons of needle coke every year to produce UHP graphite electrode, and the resource gap is large. In July 2006, Shanxi Hongte Coal Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. researched, developed and built China’s first industrial production device for coal needle coke with an annual output of 50,000 tons on the basis of absorbing Baosteel’s pilot-scale technology, and produced first-class needle coke equivalent to Japanese products. In 2007, the batch production was realized. It has become the only enterprise in China with independent intellectual property rights of coal needle coke and realized industrial production, thus breaking the situation of Japan’s exclusive monopoly of coal needle coke technology.

So far, after the expansion of a coal needle coke production unit with an annual output of 100,000 tons was put into operation, the production scale of coal needle coke of the company reached 150,000 tons/year, ranking first in the world. On this basis, the company will be based on needle coke raw materials, in-depth development of asphalt carbon fiber, carbon microspheres, nuclear graphite and other high-end carbon materials.
